A vibrant and integral part of Mexican culture, these eastern states exude fanciful flair.
Be that in Jalisco: a state renowned historically as the birthplace of ‘mariachi’ and tequila. Now enjoying a renaissance in once-sleepy coastal towns such as Yelapa. Another thing completely, Puerto Vallarta is a cosmopolitan city bursting with nightlife and resorts.
Nayarit lies north from here, enjoying an incredible stretch of Pacific coastline, coined the Riviera Nayarit. Envision fine golden sand, surf-vibes and boutique hideaways, defined by burgeoning towns like Sayulita and San Pancho. Meanwhile, lavish 5-star digs adorn the private peninsula of Punta Mita.
Michoacán is a delightful place to visit. Its capital, Morelia, is beloved for its soaring cathedral and colonial-era centre. To the east, Patzcuaro is an enchanting cobbled town with more notable indigenous traditions. Visitors from far and wide take particular interest in the Day of the Day celebrations on Isla de Janitzio, a jovial yet emotive occasion which begins with a cande-lit boat procession.
Colima, one of México’s smallest states, is a true gem. Standing stark against its surroundings, Volcan Colima remains active to this day. Not far from here, the ‘white-city’ of Comala is a charming historic town. Descending to the coast, Manzanillo is, by some margin, the state’s prime beach destination.
